Average time being invested in social networking by an HR Manager

Hi,

Can anyone figure out how average time/day an HR Manager must be investing in social networking, just curious?

If it is a concern in your organization, I would set some sort of guidelines. Depending on how many sites they are using, it could be only 10 minutes, or 45 minutes. I spend on average 20 minutes a day...most of which is in discussions which I feel add value, like this one.

Thank you Dr. Kella,

No it is not a concern in my organization. Looking to the active participation in such forums or social networking sites, I just wondered as to how much average time being spent on it everyday. If an organization is concerned about the time being spent in cleaning the SPAM emails then this should also be a factor where reasonable amount of time should be invested.

If a person is participating with fixed time frame then certainly it is a value adding exercise, but if the ratio of time spent vs value gained is reversed then it is a concern.

Thanks again,

Pankaj

Just like a buyer's place is at he vendor's and the seller's job is at the customer's, the HR executive's place is at the job market. Yet, like all aspects of HR, this time is more qualitative than quantitative.

During boom-time, networking helps to find candidates and to monitor going trends while in bust, to find HR jobs! But more seriously, a minimum exposure is a must to prevent NIH syndromes or inward-looking attitudes while excess may mean goofing off the job or getting in too many alternatives for coherent decision-making.

Although the networking activity may be 15-30 minutes on most days, there need not be any limit as long as the time does not clash with the basic duties.

I am working on a survey researching this right now, but my sample is not just HR managers. I will share the results once it is complete.

I don't know about a "daily average" time to do social networking. I tend to go a week or two without doing any social networking, but then to set aside an hour or two every once in a while to catch up or look at new discussions/groups (mostly in LinkedIn).

Sometimes I wonder how addicted people are getting to social networking in all its forms -- are they actually getting as much done at work as those who haven't been constantly on YouTube, MySpace, etc?

Thank you for sharing your views, Robert.

I also believe that developing addiction to such activities and using it excessively, certainly affects one's productivity and concentration on work. But I have not carried out any survey about average time being spent by managers and the outcome of it so can not provide the statistical support to my doubt and belief. You must have read that Dr. Kella is researching on it and once done, she might like to share her views with some statistical support with us. That will be quite interesting.
